Background: Medical instruments and instrument-assisted procedures are integral to several therapeutic practices in Unani medicine, particularly within Ilāj bi’l-Tadbīr and Ilāj bi’l-Yad. However, device-related safety concepts, adverse-event risks, infection-control requirements, and materiovigilance principles remain insufficiently organized within a dedicated Unani framework.
Objective: To systematically map medical instruments and device-related safety concepts described in Unani medicine and to develop a structured basis for a proposed Unani Materiovigilance Framework.
Materials and Methods: A structured documentary analysis was conducted using 110 eligible documentary records, including classical Unani texts, contemporary Unani literature, peer-reviewed scientific publications, and regulatory or technical documents.
Results: Peer-reviewed publications constituted 31.8% of the included records, followed by contemporary Unani sources (26.4%), classical texts (21.8%), and regulatory documents (20.0%). Suction and negative-pressure procedures were the most frequent functional category (23.6%).
Conclusion: Unani instrument-related safety is influenced by invasiveness, reusability, infection-control requirements, practitioner competency, and procedural characteristics.
